It's expensive to be poor, as more money gives people the luxury of paying less for even everyday basics like toilet paper, according to research by UC Davis Graduate School of Management Assistant Professor Mike Palazzolo. Low-income families on public assistance also often have children who are more likely to miss school or face disciplinary actions, says Palazzolo, who studies consumer choice and financial decision making.
